The Touch Game

The beginner can go a long way toward achieving the foundation of feel by playing a simplified form of the touch game. I recommend the following exercise for the more advanced golfer who is getting ready to play a round: Line up three or four balls a few inches apart. Putt the first, and look where it stops rolling. Then putt the second without looking. Guess if it went farther, the same, or not as far as the first putt. Then check. Do the same with the remaining balls, comparing the feel of “distance” to that of the first putt. The same exercise can be done with regard to direction by guessing whether the second and following putts are right or left of the first ball. Again, the idea is not to hit the “target” ball but to use it as a reference for feeling distance and/or direction. The advantage of using the first ball as a reference as opposed to the hole is that it takes away all implied pressure of “succeeding” and “not succeeding.”
